Bodh-Gaya is one of the
four pilgrimages for the
Buddhists. The four spots
- Lumbini in Nepal, where
the Lord Budha was born;
Saranath near Varanasi,
where Buddhism made its
first appearance; Kushinagara
in Gorakhpur, where Budda
attained Mahanirvana and
Bodh-Gaya, where he attained
enlightenment.
About 2600 years ago,
Siddhartha, prince of
Kapilavastu, practiced
the most rigid austerities
under a peepul tree on
the bank of Niranjana
river at Uruvilva village.
After 49 days, he attained
the enlightenment on the
full moon day of the month
of Vaisakha.
3rd century B.C., Emperor
Ashoka of Magadha dynasty
visited Bodh-Gaya in subsequent
times. He sent his daughter
Sangamitra to Sri Lanka
with a sapling of the
peepul(Bodhi) tree under
which Siddhartha attained
the enlightenment . When
the original tree died,
a sapling fromSri Lanka
was planted here at Bodh-Gaya.
The present tree is the
fourth generation of the
original. It is said that
the original of Mahabodhi
Templewas built by Ashoka
in 289 B.C.
