Darjeeling
(2134 metres above sea level) is a superlative
combination of fern-filled valleys,
snow-capped peaks and tea-scented air.
A blue toy train on the world's highest
railway track chugs through an emerald
carpet of tea gardens, passing through
a series of dizzying waterfalls and
hairpin bends.
Cradled
in the folds of the world's loftiest
mountains, Darjeeling is justly regarded
as the queen of India's `hill-stations'.
A popular retreat during the summer,
Darjeeling plays host to tourists
from all over the country and abroad.
The place spells Raj nostalgia among
the British.
The
friendly mountain people-Nepalese,
Tibetan, Bhutanese and Lepcha-welcome
you to Darjeeling district.
With
its array of scenic wonders and a
rich folk culture, Darjeeling has
something for everyone.

Darjeeling-
from ‘ Dorji Ling' means
the ‘God of Thunder'. Small
wonder then that in the quaint
little hill station, the weather
varies from the pleasant, to cold
to very cold. As you enter The
Elgin - warmth hugs you and makes
you feel at home with a glass
of sparkling cherry liquor and
a silken Khada draped around your
neck. Snug and cozy in an interior
decked with etchings of G.Douglas,
lithographs of Daniell, period
Burma teak furniture, oak floor
boards and paneling, crackling
fireplaces, candle-lit tables
and strains of music from the
grand piano, you realize the meaning
of palpable ‘old world charm'
which has played host to dignitaries
like the US Ambassador and the
Crown Prince of Sikkim to Dominique
Lapierre and Mark Tully. The hotel
has stories to tell from the time
of its first owner the Maharaja
of Cooch Behar to Nancy Oakley
in the 1950s. |

The
Nor-Khill (“the house
of jewels”) in the
state of Sikkim in eastern
Himalayas in Gangtok is
known for its tradition
and ethnic Sikkimese ambiance.
The Kanchan garden affords
a rich view of the hills
with Kanchenjungha in the
background, which inspired
the Chogyal of Sikkim to
paint for hours. The Nor-Khill
was built by the King of
Sikkim in 1932 and is the
oldest heritage hotel in
Gangtok, which entertains
guests like his holiness
The Dalai Lama, the US Ambassador
to India His Excellency
John Galbraith, movie stars
and you and your family.
The lobby is resplendent
in the bright folk art,
design motif depicting dragons
and flame symbols to thankas,
the ornate bachu and chocsue
and traditional jewellery
available at an in-house
curio shop. |

Lounging
in the landscaped gardens in a
profusion of colour, one is treated
to breathtaking view at the Silver
Oaks, Kalimpong. The natural décor
is characteristic in the imposing
Kanchenjungha which can be seen
on a clear day, blooming petunias
and asters, the serrated violet
edges of iris, iridescent butterflies
flitting through colourful azaleas,
drooping geraniums, proud orchids
and heaven, temporarily descends
on earth. Sitting in one of the
quaint gazebos, the tea seems
to be flavoured by the refreshing
winds of the Himalayas. The Silver
Oaks was built in 1930 and once
belonged to the prominent architect
Frederick Desraj who built the
old Teesta Bridge. |
